I had never heard of Chris Thompson until I heard him sing "How Can Heaven Love Me" with Sarah Brightman. That was in the beginning of 2001. I heard it over the phone. My then boyfriend called me up and said: "I swear, you'll love this guy's voice!" He knows me too well...
When his album came out about six months later, I decided to review it and - just for fun - ask for an interview. So I wrote his secretary, who got back to me and said: "Chris would love to do an interview!" This meant I had to do some research.
Turned out I actually had heard him. Not heard of, but heard. He was the voice of all my favourite Manfred Mann's Earth Band songs. "Blinded By The Light", "Mighty Quinn", "Questions" etc. Not only that, I also learned that he had penned the song that turned John Farnham into the greatest thing that's happened to Australia since Jesus walked on water: "You're The Voice". Apparently the recordcompany didn't like it and didn't think it would be a hit, so Chris gave it to John. Wise decision...
So, in November 2001 I would meet him, interview him and go to a concert. For about 24 hours I was scared shitless. I couldn't eat, couldn't sleep, thought that a man who's been well known since the early 70's has to be full of himself and think I'm a some kind of bug. So when I entered the hotel we were going to meet in, I was so nervous I didn't know what to do with myself. Then we actually met, and he was totally down to earth, answered all my stupid questions and promised to get me into the concert later on.
The concert was fabulous! This little shithole in Oslo called "Smuget" was filled up and everybody sang along. The roof almost took off! He's approaching 60, but his voice and stage energy is like that of a young man. I've been hooked ever since.
