Patrick Swayze was my first "true love". Or: He was the first man I ever laid eyes on. More correctly, he's the first man I ever laid my eyes on and they stayed there. For about three years.
I was 12 the first time I saw "Dirty Dancing" and let me tell
you, my jaw dropped through the floor when "Baby" and I saw "Johnny" for the first time. All of a sudden everything with horses faded in my head (mind you, I was one of those 'I Love Horses' chick for years!), and all there was left was Patrick. Patrick, Patrick, Patrick.
"Dirty Dancing" is probably his most well-known thing. He started out as a dancer when he was six and now - at 50 - he's made his last(?) dance movie called "One Last Dance". It was supposed to be called "Without A Word" and has been *in production* for like a decade. Starring him and his wife, Lisa Niemi (for the n'th time). She's Finnish. For a while I was annoyed with the fact that he couldn't have stopped by Norway before he went all the way to Finland - until I realised the man was 29 years older than me. Ouch!
I do remember when I was younger - around seven or eight - that every Saturday night we'd watch Eastenders and then "North and South". Back in the days when families actually watched TV together - and way back when there was actually some quality TV... (What's on a Saturday night now anyway? "Idol"? Football? The re-run of "Popstars"? Makes you want to stay in and vegetate in front of the screen, doesn't it?)
So, besides "Dirty Dancing" and "North and South", what did he
do? He did "Road House". And, oh God, did he do it. I watched that movie a zillion times - a certain scene inside his barn-room with Kelly Lynch twice as many times - and though it's slightly 80's, it's fun. Yeah, it's nice to have something to rest your eyes on for 90 minutes...
He also did "Ghost" with Demi Moore. You know you're a Patrick
Swayze fan when you think of sex and clay whenever you hear "Unchained Melody".
How could anyone forget "Too Wong Foo" where he, Westley Snipes and
John Leguizamo dressed up as dragqueens? I particularly remember a scene with a light-pink dress, a cop and Patrick saying "When a lady says no she means... get your hands off my d***, buddy!"
Patrick sings as well. "She's Like The Wind" was... well, even
though I realise now that he's not exactly a smashing vocalist, I absolutely loved (ok, love) that song. I think every girl/woman has a thing for a soft ballad from time to time, and this pretty much does it for most of those females. He also did a couple of songs for the soundtrack to "Road House" - "Cliff's Edge" and "Raising Heaven (In Hell Tonight)", plus "Brothers" for "Next of Kin".
Lately his movies haven't intrigued me as much as his past efforts, but it's a fond memory anyway. I guess he'll always be 'my first'
